2-story, mixed-use building planned for empty lot in Salem

Location: 890 Commercial St. NE

Description: An empty lot on Commercial Street north of the Salem Police station is slated to become the home of two new two-story, mixed-use buildings.

A site plan filed with the city depicts two buildings with ground-floor commercial space and second-floor residential space along with a seven-stall parking lot. Between the two buildings, there will be seven apartment units ranging from studios to two-bedrooms.

The lot has been vacant for at least 17 years, according to Google Maps records.

The location is across the street from a Grocery Outlet. The area north of downtown Salem has seen a surge in development in recent years, including the opening of the Salem Police headquarters in 2020 and new Union Gospel Mission shelter in 2021.

With the upcoming revitalization of the Truitt Bros. Cannery, even more redevelopment will be coming to the neighborhood. The development is set to include housing, a brewery, sports arena, restaurants and retail.
