Harris accuses Trump of pitting Americans against each other, floats ‘unity’ card | World News - The Indian Express
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump “divides Americans against each other,” alleged his Democratic rival and Vice President Kamala Harris on Friday. Addressing a campaign in the Milwaukee area, Harris pledged to pursue sensible solutions and “act as a president for all Americans” in swing-state Wisconsin’s largest county.
“America deserves better than what Donald Trump is offering. America deserves a president who understands our responsibilities, both to our own people and to the world, as a model nation,” she said.
Harris told the crowd at the Wisconsin State Fair Park Exposition Centre that, with four days left, there was still work to be done, but “we like hard work.”
Just moments before, during an energetic warm-up, rapper Cardi B referred to Trump as “Donnie Dunk” and told the crowd, “Trump says he’s going to protect women whether they like it or not. Well, if his definition of protection is not the freedom of choice, if his definition of protection means ensuring our daughters have fewer rights than our mothers, then I don’t want it! I don’t want it! I don’t want it!”
With the presidential campaign entering its final days, Harris and Trump are delivering closing arguments to voters in key swing states. Speaking to reporters in Wisconsin, Harris reiterated, “As I have often said, my pledge to the American people is to pursue common-sense solutions, to listen to everyone – even those who disagree with me, to consult experts, and to serve as a president for all Americans.”
In her address, Harris contrasted her approach with Trump’s, saying, “Donald Trump’s closing argument is very different. He encourages Americans to turn against each other, constantly sowing division. He spends considerable time plotting revenge against his political opponents.”
Harris criticised Trump’s recent choices, stating that he plans to place someone in charge of American healthcare who has “promoted junk science and conspiracy theories” and previously voiced support for a national abortion ban. “He’s the last person who should be setting health policy for American families,” she said.
Describing Trump as increasingly vengeful and “unstable,” Harris warned that his rhetoric has grown more extreme, and he’s even less focused on Americans’ concerns than before. “He views political opponents as enemies, with a growing ‘enemies list’ and a mindset that suggests retribution for mere disagreement.”
Highlighting her commitment to democratic ideals, Harris said, “I believe in our democracy. It’s complicated, wonderfully so, because it allows for debate and welcomes differences of opinion. One reason I intend to have a Republican in my Cabinet is to embrace diverse perspectives, which help me make the best decisions.”
She concluded, “That is the key difference between me and Donald Trump. A true leader values democracy, welcomes checks and balances, and isn’t solely in it for unchecked power.”
Milwaukee, a Democratic stronghold in Wisconsin, contrasts with its conservative suburbs where Republicans dominate, making the area crucial for Trump’s attempt to reclaim the state he won in 2016 but lost in 2020. His previous defeat was partly due to a drop in suburban support and increased Democratic votes in Milwaukee.
Both parties expect another razor-thin race for Wisconsin’s 10 electoral votes, as four of the last six elections were decided by under 23,000 votes. Harris aims to boost turnout in Milwaukee, which backed Biden with 79% of votes in 2020, to counter Trump’s suburban and rural support.
