Nursery to relocate to former nursing home site

A nursery forced to relocate by redevelopment work has had permission to move to the site of a former nursing home.

Oakengates Nursery School is situated within Oakengates Theatre, which is being regenerated as part of the town's theatre quarter project.

The nursery's new site was formerly that of Cartlidge House, a 54-bed, two-storey care home which closed in 2021.

Telford and Wrekin Council approved the move, which would see two demountable buildings, a play area, bigger car park, and open green space for children.

According to plans, the main body of the nursery would be within one demountable, which would stretch the length of the former care home.

An existing demountable containing outdoor play equipment and a further single classroom would be transferred to the new site.

A new hardstanding play area would be created, as well as an extension to the current car park, to create more room for staff and parents.

The nursery would provide placements for up to 105 children, aged up to five.

The £21m rebuild of Oakengates Theatre is designed to bring improvements including a larger main auditorium and community arts room.

It shut in March, and is due to reopen in October 2026.
