Southwest Berkeley 2-alarm fire displaces 3 people

A two-alarm structure fire in Southwest Berkeley displaced three people Thursday afternoon.

A caller first reported the fire, on the 1500 block of Oregon Street near Sacramento Street, shortly before 3 p.m., Berkeley Fire Department spokesperson Dafina Dailey said in an email.

“A two-story residential building was engulfed in flames and the incident was quickly upgraded to a two-alarm fire,” Dailey said. Firefighters from the Oakland, Albany and the El Cerrito-Kensington fire departments assisted during the second alarm, she said.

Firefighters had the blaze under control at 3:50 p.m., Dailey said. There were no injuries reported. BFD contacted the American Red Cross to assist with the people affected.

“It appears that the fire may have started on the second floor, however, the cause is still under investigation,” Dailey said. BFD did not have an estimate of the damage done.
