Two people suffered smoke inhalation, and a man had to escape by going out a second floor window onto the roof when a fire erupted in a Fort Dodge house early Wednesday morning.

When firefighters arrived at 212 S. 16th St. they found the man trapped on the roof, two other residents outside in front of the house and flames shooting out first floor windows in the rear of the house.

Firefighters were told that another person was in the house. An aggressive search and rescue effort was launched, but no one was found. It was later learned that the individual who was believed to be in the house had escaped on her own, according to Fire Department reports.

Two dogs died in the fire.

The fire was reported at 4:26 a.m.

Firefighters put up a ladder to rescue the man on the roof. They also took a hoseline into the house to extinguish the fire while searching for the person believed to be trapped. Several searches were conducted, firefighters said.

Two people suffering from smoke inhalation were taken to UnityPoint Health –Trinity Regional Medical Center. One of them was later transferred to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

The Fire Department reported severe fire damage in the kitchen and porch area, with heavy heat and smoke damage throughout the rest of the house.

The house is owned by Joanne and Roger Petersen, according to online records of the Webster County Assessor’s Office. The two-story frame home was built in 1891, according to those records.

Fort Dodge police and Webster County Animal Protection assisted firefighters at the scene.

While working at this scene, the Fire Department also responded to a gas leak in a home and a medical emergency.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
